Yes, I have watched all of the Storage Wars New York episodes and it has elements that are real and other elements that are fake. For example, Mike & Joe P were real storage auction buyers before the show premiered; however, the girls have no experience with storage auctions and were added to the cast for sex appeal.
Yes, you can find some amazing things in storage units but it doesn't happen that often. The show usually depicts one or more characters finding some amazing treasure in every episode...those items are definitely staged. The following article will shed more light on this subject.

Well what they show is real. However most of the time the characters on the show do not end up buying the units. I think they said between the 4 of them, they win about 10% of the units being auctioned. A lot of the filming for each episode takes a few weeks since it can take that long for the characters to win 3 or 4 units between them. When the show 1st started usually 15 or so other people would show up, the average unit went for $75-$100, with $1000 being rare for a unit selling price. Now hundreds show up, the average unit is around $800, and some go for as high as $8000-$10000. So they have really hurt themselves.

Most reality shows are rigged and contrived in some shape or form to draw viewers' attention. I actually enjoy watching all the Storage Wars shows, albeit knowing that they are probably staged. The New York series seems really fake. Laverne and Shirley are so weird.

Fake, lots of stories about it in addition to just obviously being fake. I think even Dave from storage wars came out and said it's all fake when he was whining and mad because they booted him from the show. i was going to storage aucitons long before the tv shows came on and it's nothing like the tv shows.
